ASAM OpenX® for standardized scenarios

The ASAM OpenX® standards are crucial for the automotive and vehicle simulation industry as they offer a common ground for the description of road infrastructure, road users, 3D environments and driving scenarios. They promote interoperability and data exchange between different systems and applications. We at IPG Automotive know about the relevance of these standards and are therefore supporting their further development in the respective ASAM project groups. At the same time, our product portfolio is especially focusing on the support of standards OpenDRIVE®, OpenSCENARIO® and OpenMATERIAL® 3D, which is currently in the final development stage.

The OpenDRIVE® standard describes the static road infrastructure with its road geometry, including lanes, crossings and traffic signs. Our CarMaker product family enables the import and export of current OpenDRIVE® versions and simplifies not only the use of OpenDRIVE® files on the CarMaker simulation platform for our customers, but also the generation of OpenDRIVE® files for use across the entire development process.

OpenSCENARIO® defines the dynamic aspects of traffic scenarios. It describes the behavior of road users as well as their interactions with the environment and is used in the different stages of development and validation of ADAS and autonomous driving functions. IPG Automotive currently pursues supporting OpenSCENARIO® XML, because this standard was mainly developed for use in the field of simulation and enables detailed maneuver and road user specifications.

OpenMATERIAL® 3D enables standardizing 3D objects and therefore the environment which is especially crucial for sensor simulation. The standard enables defining the geometry as well as material properties of 3D objects and provides an additional important level for the description of standardized scenarios.

With OpenDRIVE®, OpenSCENARIO® and, in the future, OpenMATERIAL® 3D, we see the possibility of defining static, dynamic as well as material-specific and geometry characteristics in a standardized way and thus describe scenarios holistically. By covering the standards, we offer our customers an open integration platform for the use of tool-independently generated scenarios, as well as complete and realistic simulation of traffic scenarios. This is decisive for developing and testing autonomous driving functions as it enables precise modeling of the real world and therefore increases system safety and reliability.
