For the second year in a row, IPG Automotive teamed up with IMechE to facilitate the Formula Student Lap Time Simulation event. In 2022, the number of participants increased to over 60 teams from all over the world, competing for the number one spot.
The competition continued utilizing IPG Automotive’s simulation environment, designed for industry to robustly store and manage data collaboratively as well as to seamlessly build CarMaker virtual prototypes with the click of a button. Each team was required to configure the best virtual prototype they could, first by choosing the desired power source, whether that was electric with one or four electric motors or internal combustion engine with or without turbocharger. Then they could choose from various suspension and aerodynamics options and finally define specific vehicle parameters such as spring stiffness, anti-roll bar stiffness and final gear ratios. The teams also had the option to specify additional driver parameters to further improve their vehicle’s performance, which was a new addition from last year.
The top performing entries were those that managed to find the optimal combination of vehicle and driver setup, providing the best times across three virtual events. The teams did a fantastic job, with special recognition to Oxford Brookes Racing, who won the competition, delivering a consistent performance across the 3 events, beating University of Malta Racing by 214.62 to 188.6 points.

This year, as a bonus, the winning team has also been given the chance to experience CarMaker on AB Dynamics’ driving simulator at their site in Bidford-on-Avon.
As a proud partner of the Formula Student Competition, IPG Automotive attended the live event at Silverstone Race Circuit, where we were incredibly pleased to engage with different teams and discuss how we can help them at a local level.
