First Day of the Conference
“My name is NOX the Robot!” That’s right – guests were welcomed to this year’s conference by a technological giant measuring 2.40 m in height. Not surprisingly, this sophisticated mechanical creation made the hearts of many engineers pound. Robots may not be involved in the development of new vehicle models (yet), but virtualization and digitalization of traffic scenarios to validate advanced driver assistance systems, sensor functions, and vehicle dynamics components in virtual prototypes are becoming increasingly important. “With our customers, we are seeing more fundamental changes being made to the development process. In fact, it’s undergoing a real transformation. In the future, simulation will be an essential part of getting vehicles approved for series production,” said Steffen Schmidt, Managing Director of IPG Automotive, summarizing the latest developments.
Shun Kawabe from Honda confirmed this, talking in his keynote speech about front-loading in vehicle development by means of virtual prototypes as a solution to the challenges currently being faced and the resulting process reforms. Using several examples from various fields of application, he showed that virtual prototypes make it possible to validate concepts affecting the vehicle as a whole early on and at every stage of the design phase, before physical prototypes even have to be constructed.
In the keynote speech given by Jinhwa Lee from the Hyundai Motor Company, attention turned to the development of virtual prototypes and how they can be used in a range of fields of application. Sven-Etienne Henschel from EFS Elektronische Fahrwerksysteme and Rohan Prakash Deshetti from Robert Bosch gave a keynote speech about the incredible leaps in the development of virtualization, referring to the example of brake control systems as the result of close collaboration between OEMs and suppliers.
This was followed by a whole host of interesting talks on innovative simulation projects, presented by companies, universities, and research institutes in parallel sessions. The content covered focused on applications in the fields of driver assistance and automated driving, artificial intelligence, powertrains, and vehicle dynamics. There was plenty of time for networking and discussions during the breaks.
The first day of the event ended much as it had begun – with Robot NOX mingling with guests at the evening event and providing a popular photo opportunity. The good weather meant that attendees could chat among themselves outside during the evening, closing the first day of the conference in style.
Second Day of the Conference
The second day of the conference was again dedicated to the development and use of virtual prototypes. There were also sessions on scenario generation for the purpose of validating functions for automated driving. The use of artificial intelligence on the way to autonomous driving made for another focal point once more.
IPG Automotive was again able to reach a large group of automotive manufacturers, suppliers, and research institutes at Apply & Innovate, with the varied program reflecting the latest developments within which virtual test driving is being deployed as part of the process. The positive feedback from attendees just goes to show that they value Apply & Innovate highly as a fixture on the events calendar and see it as offering innovative input into their own projects.
Demonstration of Practical Applications at the Exhibition
Over the course of the two days, 3D Mapping Solutions, AB Dynamics, atlatec, AZAPA, Bosch Engineering, Elektrobit, Gamma Technologies, GeneSys Elektronik, HORIBA, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Konrad Technologies, KS ENGINEERS, PTV, QTronic, rFpro, S.E.A. Datentechnik, Soluzioni Ingegneria, and TRANSPOLIS all appeared as part of the accompanying exhibition.
There was also the opportunity to visit the booths of some of the exhibitors to learn all there is to know about customer-specific applications of IPG Automotive products and ask questions during 10-minute pitch sessions.
IPG Automotive also had its own booth on both days of the conference, where it presented new features of the CarMaker simulation solution. Parallel simulation on several processors or processor cores using standard high-performance computing clusters or cloud-based solutions attracted a lot of attention in particular. Due to come out in spring 2019, Release 8.0 of the CarMaker simulation solution will include lots more new features.
